The legal way to get a stock photo without a watermark is to download it under a license: either from a free-license site, where photos come without a watermark from the start, or by buying a license from a paid stock agency, which then gives you the clean high-resolution file. ## Free stock photos without watermarks

Several sites publish photos you can download without a watermark and use for free, also commercially in most cases:

- **CC0 / public domain collections.** CC0 means the author waived their rights; you can use, edit and publish the photo without attribution. StockSnap and many museum collections publish CC0 images, and **Openverse** searches millions of openly licensed images by license.
- **Unsplash.** High-quality photos under the Unsplash License: free for commercial and personal use without permission, but you may not sell the photos unaltered or build a competing photo service from them.
- **Pexels.** Photos and videos under the Pexels License, with similar conditions to Unsplash.
- **Pixabay.** Photos, illustrations and vectors under the Pixabay Content License, which also excludes selling unaltered copies.
- **Wikimedia Commons.** Many licenses side by side; check each file, as some require attribution or share-alike.

Free licenses still have limits. Photos with recognizable people or brands may need a model or property release for advertising, and some sites forbid using images in a misleading way. Read the license page once; it takes two minutes.

Agencies such as Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Getty Images and iStock show watermarked previews. After you buy a license, you download the full-resolution file without the watermark. Typical license types:
