How to Watermark Your Photos So They Are Hard to Remove

How to add a watermark to your photos: transparent logo, placement, opacity and size, why corner watermarks are easy to erase with AI, and other ways to protect images.

To watermark your photos, create a transparent PNG of your logo or name, place it over an important part of the image at 20-50% opacity, and export a resized copy for the web while you keep the clean original. A small mark in a corner looks tidy but is easy to crop out or erase with AI tools; a larger, semi-transparent mark over the subject protects better at the cost of a busier look.

Why watermark your photos

  • Credit travels with the image. When a photo is shared without a link, the watermark still shows who made it.
  • It discourages casual copying. Most people who would reuse an image move on when it is clearly marked.
  • It promotes your brand. A tasteful mark on portfolio and social posts brings people back to you.

A watermark does not create copyright; your photos are protected anyway. It makes ownership visible and copying less tempting.

Step 1: create a transparent watermark

A watermark needs a transparent background so only the logo or text appears on the photo. If your logo is a JPG on a white background, convert it with the logo background remover to get a transparent PNG. A handwritten signature works too: photograph it on white paper and use remove background from signature. If the logo file is small, enlarge it first with the logo upscaler so the mark stays sharp on large photos.

Make two versions: a white one for dark photos and a dark one for light photos.

Step 2: choose placement, size and opacity

StyleLooksProtection
Small mark in a cornerClean, professionalLow: cropped or erased in seconds
Medium mark near the subject, 20-40% opacityVisible but balancedMedium: harder to remove without damage
Large mark across the subjectBusyHigh: removal leaves visible traces on detailed areas
Tiled pattern across the whole imagePreview style, not for portfoliosHighest: used by stock agencies for previews

For a portfolio, a medium mark that overlaps part of the subject is a good balance. For client proofs and previews, use a large or tiled mark.

Step 3: add the watermark

  • Lightroom Classic: Edit Watermarks lets you add a graphic or text watermark to every export automatically.
  • Photoshop: place the PNG as a layer, set the opacity and save it as an action for batches.
  • Canva and similar tools: upload the PNG, place it, adjust transparency and download.
  • Phone apps: many free apps add a logo or text watermark in batches.

Why corner watermarks are easy to remove

AI inpainting tools rebuild a painted area from its surroundings. A small logo on sky, a wall or a plain backdrop has simple surroundings, so it disappears almost without a trace. A mark that crosses a face, hair, text or a detailed pattern is much harder, because the AI has to invent unique detail and the edit shows. Our own watermark remover is meant for images you have rights to, and our terms forbid using it on other people's work, but other tools may not ask. Place your mark with that in mind.

Protect your photos beyond the watermark

  • Export at web size. Share 1600-2000 px wide copies; keep full-resolution files for clients and print.
  • Add copyright metadata. Fill in creator, copyright and contact fields (IPTC/EXIF) in your editor. Some platforms keep them.
  • Search for copies. Reverse image search in Google Lens, Bing or TinEye shows where your images appear.
  • Register important work where your country offers copyright registration; it can matter in a dispute.
  • Use proofs for clients. Deliver watermarked low-resolution previews before payment and clean files after.

Keep the clean originals

Always keep an unwatermarked master of every photo. If you rebrand or need a clean copy later, you can export again instead of removing your own mark. If an original is lost, our guide how to remove a watermark from a photo shows how to clean your own image.
