How to Remove a Watermark from a Photo (Your Own Images)
Step-by-step guide to removing a watermark from a photo you own: AI eraser, Photoshop and GIMP methods, tips for semi-transparent and tiled watermarks.

To remove a watermark from a photo you own, open it in an AI object remover, paint over the watermark including its shadow or glow, and let the AI fill the area with background that matches the surroundings. Small watermarks on simple backgrounds disappear in one pass; large or tiled watermarks over detailed areas need a few passes and a careful check at full size.
This guide walks through the process, explains why some watermarks are harder than others, and compares the AI method with Photoshop and GIMP.
Before you start: whose image is it?
Watermarks usually protect the copyright of a photographer, an agency or a brand. Removing one is a normal edit when the image is yours or you have the right to use it without the mark, for example:
- you took the photo and only kept a watermarked export;
- your shop or company changed its name and the old logo is on your product photos;
- you licensed a stock photo after designing with the watermarked preview;
- the photographer gave you permission to use the image without the stamp.
If none of these apply, license the image or ask the owner instead. Our article is it legal to remove a watermark explains the rules in more detail.
How to remove a watermark with an AI eraser
- Open the object remover in any modern browser on desktop or mobile.
- Upload the photo. JPG, PNG and WEBP files up to 16 MB are supported.
- Pick a brush size a little wider than the strokes of the logo or letters.
- Paint over the watermark. Include the faint edge, drop shadow or semi-transparent box around it.
- Run the removal. The AI generates new pixels for the painted area from the surrounding image.
- Compare and repeat. Use the before and after view, zoom in, paint over any leftover trace and run it again, then download.
The technique behind this is called inpainting: the AI predicts what plausibly belongs in the painted area. It does not recover the original pixels under the watermark, it creates a convincing fill. See what is AI inpainting for how it works.
Why some watermarks are harder to remove
| Watermark | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Small logo or text in a corner, on sky, wall or studio background | Usually clean in one pass |
| Semi-transparent logo in the middle of the image | Good on textures like grass, sand or fabric; check for a faint outline |
| Watermark over a face, hands or fine detail | Hard; the AI has to invent unique detail, work in small sections |
| Tiled pattern repeated across the whole image | Possible but slow; remove one copy at a time and keep the best result |
| Thin diagonal lines or grids over everything | Very hard; a clean original or a licensed copy is the better route |
Tips for a clean result
Paint a little beyond the visible edge
Semi-transparent watermarks fade out softly. If you paint only the clearly visible part, a ghost outline remains. A brush stroke a few pixels wider than the mark avoids that.
Remove large watermarks in pieces
For a big logo, paint and remove one part, then the next. Each pass gives the AI more clean surroundings to sample from.
Watch straight lines and edges
When a watermark crosses a horizon, a table edge or a building, check that the line continues straight after the removal. If it bends, paint a narrower area and run it again.
Start from the highest-quality file
Heavy JPG compression leaves blocky artifacts around a watermark that can confuse the fill. Use the best version you have, and if the final image is small, enlarge it with the image upscaler.
Keep the original
Save an untouched copy before editing so you can start over with a different brush stroke if the first attempt is not right.
Other ways to remove a watermark
- Photoshop: Content-Aware Fill, the Remove tool, Generative Fill, or the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush for full manual control.
- GIMP: the Clone and Heal tools, plus the free Resynthesizer plugin for content-aware filling.
- Phone gallery apps: many recent phones include a built-in eraser, depending on the model and software version.
- The source file: if you added the watermark yourself in Lightroom, Canva or another editor, export again without the watermark layer. This is always the cleanest option.
Removing a watermark works the same way as removing text, so the tips in how to remove text from an image also apply.
